LECTURE: Understanding file format

EVERYTHING in the internet in a compressed file: movies on Netflix, mp3, videos etc.

File formats in digital media



  • All computer documents or files are made in different formats
  • Depending what program you use can be  made into a fie
  • Graphic files like photos are made like compression format so they can be streamed into the internet


Lossy vs Lossles


  • All compression formats will fall into one of the two categories
  • Lossy reduces the image quality or the video and makes it low quality. Losses your data.
  • Lossless makes your file in more universally readable and tries to keep quality right. Use lossless if you want better quality so its easier.

Graphic Formats

  • TIF, JPG,GIF are the most common formats 
  1. GIF-graphic interchange format
  2. TIF- Tag image format
  3. JPG-Photographer expert group
  • PNG is a common web format and is high quality and contains an alpha channel
  • Each format has its advantages

TIF



  • Common format for desktop publishing
  • is lossless file format 
  • not fit for display over the internet


JPG

  • created for  digital photography and works best for photo content
  • is a LOSSY 
  •  can reduce image quality size 10:1without showing significant compression
  • the level of comparison is adjustable
  • GIF is the choice to export a photo like cartoons and graphics
  • Don't save cartoons as JPG


GIF




  • best for graphic images that have flat color 
  • reduces image by indexing color
  • is adjustable to changing color bit levels
  • Contains no DPI data for printing.
